about the movie

A portrait of James Baldwin, one of the towering figures of 20th-century American literature, Black culture and political thought, filmed in Paris. The iconic writer is captured in many symbolic locations in Paris, where he was living at the time.

why were watching it

The 28-minute documentary is stressful to watch and, frankly, I think it needs to be watched in community because your body goes through so much when you’re watching it. It presents the tension between two people (the documentarian and the author) and the tension between two concepts (consumerism and humanity) James Baldwin models grace, defends his love ethic, and stays committed to sharing his truth. Writers love to write and know how to form their craft, but do we know how to say, “how I tell me story is more important than your expectation of it.”
